As quoted by Louis Rossetto, “No product is made today, no person moves today, nothing is collected, analyzed or communicated without some ‘digital technology’ being an integral part of it. That, in itself, speaks to the overwhelming ‘value’ of digital technology.”, we have come to understand the importance of digitalization.

Digitalization is the use of digital technologies to change a business model and provide a new revenue and value producing opportunities: it is the process of moving to digital business. Also, we might get confused by the term digitization which is pretty similar to digitalization. So, to be clear, Digitization is the process of converting data or information into digital format. In other words, we can say that digitization is a part of digitalization in any business.

In business, digitalization most often refers to enabling, improving or transforming business operations or business models/processes and/or activities, by the influence of digital technologies with a specific benefit in mind. For example, in due course of making your business digitalized, you can automate the registration of your business with the government without actually having to go to government offices. We all know the hassle and struggle!

Digitalization in India

Digital India is a vision to transform India digitally by infusing technology in governance, also known as E-Governance. This campaign was initiated by our Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 1 2015, it is both enabler and beneficiary of other key Government of India schemes, such as BharatNet, Make in India, Startup India, and Standup India, etc. The initiative is complementary to RTI(Right to Information), because putting information online brings transparency, which helps in building trust.

Digital India consists of three core components:

  1. development of secure and stable digital infrastructure
  2. delivering government services digitally
  3. universal digital literacy.

India’s growing stature in the Information Age enabled it to form close ties with both the United States and the European Union. According to the IBEF (India Brand Equity Foundation) figures, the Indian IT industry is set to touch $225 billion by 2020. New technologies are emerging in the IT industry like IoT(Internet of things), which is said to create millions of jobs in India.

IoT is the network of physical devices, vehicles, home appliances, and other items embedded with electronics, software, sensors, actuators, and connectivity which enables these things to connect, collect and exchange data. Nearly100 cities have been identified to be made smart under Smart City Mission in a span of 5 years. Use of IoT in Digital India can be seen in these scenarios: introducing smart and automated solutions in agriculture, city planning, vehicular traffic, water and electricity management, parking solutions etc. Besides, smart IoT-powered water and energy meters are a few examples of a smart city, which itself can benefit immensely from IoT.

Talking about the workforce in the future, according to analysis, digitalization can create up to 6 million jobs worldwide between 2016 and 2025 in the logistics and electrical industry alone. In India, for example, it is estimated that three to four jobs are created for every job within the business process outsourcing and IT-enabled services sectors.

We can at least be sure that there will be three types of jobs, categorized by type of the role:

  • The ones that will disappear (where everything can be automated). For example, clerks and administrative staff, or truck drivers.
  • Those that are in collaboration with machines/algorithms (run with the machine), such as doctors/surgeons.
  • Those jobs that are completely new or remain largely untouched. For example, roles in the creative arts are unlikely to be automated.

In a boost to Narendra Modi’s ‘Digital India’, the Internet services industry will fetch around 12 million (1.2 crores) jobs by 2022. We can see the impact of digital India in different aspects in the IT sector, be it start-ups, emerging technologies like IoT as mentioned earlier, will open new windows to upcoming engineers, professionals in these fields.

We cannot talk about Digital India and business without getting into Digital marketing and its importance in changing business strategies and taking marketing to a whole new different level.

Digital Marketing in Digital India

Let me walk you through the advantages of Digital India campaign on the digital marketing sector:

  1. Currently, there are 480 million active internet users in the country. This number is expected to go up to 762 million in 2022. With the advancement in Digital India campaign, more people will be able to connect to the internet and hence enhance the number of finding a potential customer for your business online becomes easy.
  1. Revenue generation will rise due to the increase in interest of people in new technologies. With e-marketing activities, generation of revenues will become easy.
  2. Improved customer engagement with the use of Social Media Marketing and updates.

To some extent, start-ups such as Paytm, Ola and Flipkart have enabled the inclusion of most sections of the society to participate in their digital products and services. However, the quality of digitization of government services is sometimes not up to the mark. They are difficult to navigate even for digital-savvy urban users; not to mention, semi-literate or illiterate masses for whom it is supposed to be more beneficial.

It is very important for your business to have a website in the first place if you want to create your presence online. The second step in contributing to Digital India from your business would be maintaining that online reputation, appear on top of result page with SEO(Search Engine Optimisation) activities, collect revenue through ads, etc.
